Furtwangen, June 23, 2008 – Reiner SCT, market leader in secure smart card readers for multifunctional applications, played a key role in the two-year development process. The Furtwangen-based company supported the work of the ZKA specification committees, contributed to the technical design of the underlying security concept and developed special SECODER readers. Among the SECODER approvals issued by the ZKA for the first time on June 20, chip card readers from Reiner SCT are in the top position. With three SECODER-capable devices from the cyber Jack product series, Reiner SCT is the market leader in this device class right from the start. The more than 120,000 cyber Jack e-com devices on the market can be easily updated to the new standard, even if they are already seven years old. This underlines Reiner SCT’s claim to manufacture high-quality and durable devices that also meet the latest standards. In addition, the card readers can be used for a variety of other smart card applications. Reiner SCT presented the first SECODER application together with the GAD computer center at this year’s CeBIT in Hanover. Reiner SCT was also involved in finding the brand name. The SECODER specification – initially still known as “KT-light” – will replace the ZKA’s ICT specification for the “Internet customer terminal”, which is around ten years old. In principle, SECODER is suitable for any online credit application, for HBCI/FinTS as well as for electronic signatures and the GeldKarte. This makes the new specification an important trailblazer for other smart card application scenarios, for example for convenient card payments at home or topping up electronic wallets via the Internet. “All security-critical entries are outsourced from the PC to a connected reader,” says Carsten Sommer, Managing Director of Reiner SCT, explaining the security aspect. “Neither Trojans nor keyloggers will have a chance to record access data in order to manipulate transactions. The transfer data will be shown on the device display. However, it is important that the banks support this function.”

Seal of quality creates trust

In future, a SECODER seal awarded by the ZKA will indicate whether a card reader meets the new standard.
For this purpose, the device must undergo extensive functional and security tests by independent test laboratories.
Reiner SCT is promoting the rapid dissemination of the new security standard and is supporting software manufacturers and system integrators in adapting their solutions at an early stage. (The text contains approx. 3,201 characters)
